Earth Month at Astek

What comes to mind when you think of April? It might be warmer weather or springtime flowers. However, it’s also Earth Month, a time to raise awareness of environmental issues, advocate for the planet, and find new ways to preserve our resources. As our planet continues to nurture and care for us unconditionally, we must take steps to return the favor. While we pride ourselves on finding sustainable solutions for our operations and clients all year long, we wanted to take this opportunity to do something a little extra earth-conscious this month.

This year, we wanted to find ways to repurpose our wallcovering scraps. Through the efforts of our Sustainability Committee, a peer-led coalition to make Astek HQ more earth-friendly, we hosted upcycling workshops for the company. By using printing scraps, ranging from excess wallcovering to color test sheets, staff were then guided in a step-by-step process to create unique no-sew envelope pouches. Not only did this give everyone a chance to express themselves creatively, but it diverted wallcovering waste from the trash and transformed it into attractive, usable bags.

Additionally, Astek is in the process of partnering with Denver-based nonprofit Mile High Workshop, which specializes in upcycling commercial materials. Our company aims to use this opportunity to turn more of our material scraps into usable products that will be enjoyed for years to come.

The choice to make environmentally-conscious decisions can be addressed on every level, from the operation standards of a company to individual actions. Taking time to reflect and consider how to reduce our carbon footprint can make a world of difference when it comes to protecting the beauty and wonder of our planet. With that in mind, our goal is to make every day feel like Earth Day.
