Kelly Wearstler's Austin Proper Hotel
If there’s one thing award-winning interior designer Kelly Wearstler is known for, it’s confident vibrancy. The mark she leaves in spaces is bold and playful, unlike any other. The Austin Proper Hotel is no exception. Wearstler’s impressive portfolio of high-profile clients meant she was no stranger to creating sophisticated spaces that are nothing short of spectacular.
Located in the lively heart of Texas, she explains that this space takes inspiration from Austin’s “amalgam of unexpected, unique imaginations that come alive in one space.”[1] Naturally, some Southern charm made its way into the stylistic details, as she used the city as her muse. Known for mixing vintage and contemporary styles, Austin Proper features a unique old-timey allure seen in stately Texan homes, paired with a modern edge that doesn’t let you drift too far into the past. Warm woods are the main finish found at the hotel, creating a base color palette that is neutral and welcoming, only to be sharply contrasted with mismatched prints, textures, and furniture.
Astek printed multiple wallcoverings to complement Wearstler’s “maximalist farmhouse vision,” all colorfully patterned like the rest of the hotel. Our wares feature elevated motifs that pay homage to Texas’ Southern grace, from an illustrative cornfield design in a private dining room to pink and yellow fields in the spa. Without missing a chance to dress a wall, Wearstler even opted to place a warm wheat design on the ceiling of the main bar area! Thoughtful choices cleverly remind the guest they’re in the state capital while impressing them with bold design details they never saw coming. With no two rooms the same, each space is uniquely immersive and “infused with a creative spirit that is constantly evolving.”[2]
